The Russia Football Union has canceled an effective transfer embargo on FC Volga, allowing the club to field new players in their first match of the new Premier League season, the club said Thursday.

The ban was imposed in May for unpaid debts to former players and did not prevent Volga making signings but would have stopped the cash-strapped team registering any new acquisitions.

"Volga will add a number of players to the application before the start of the season," Volga said, suggesting that new faces could be in the lineup when they take on Dynamo Moscow in their first game of the new season Saturday.

The Russian Football Union did not comment.

The union slapped the embargo on Volga in May after two Georgian players, defender Lasha Salukvadze and midfielder Gogita Gogua, claimed that their former club owed them wages.

Volga stayed in the top flight last season in their first Premier League campaign, but were forced to play a promotion-relegation playoff against city rivals FC Nizhny Novgorod, which Volga won 2-1.

FC Nizhny folded soon afterwards.

The Russian summer transfer window closes September 10.
