Dundee FC will replace bankrupt Rangers in the Scottish Premier League next season, the league and the Dundee said Monday.

Rangers’ demotion to the Third Division left an space empty in the top flight to be handed to relegated Dunfermline and Dundee, who had finished second in last year’s First Division.

“It was agreed that Dundee FC would be invited to fill the space vacated by Rangers FC in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League,” the SPL said in a website statement after its annual general meeting.

“CEO Scot Gardiner has been contacted by the SPL this afternoon to confirm that Dundee FC will be Club 12 and is to participate in the SPL,” Dundee said on its website.

Dunfermline had pleaded to stay in the top flight arguing that the move was justified on precedent.

“Dunfermline Athletic will play in the First Division next season,” the team said on its website.
