Russian heavyweight WBC-US champion Magomed Abdusalamov has retained his title with a second-round stoppage of American fighter Maurice Byarm.

The referee ended Friday's fight in Las Vegas after Byarm became unable defend a flurry of punches from his opponent after being saved by the bell in round one.

It stretches the Dagestan-born boxer's fearsome record to 14 knockouts in 14 fights, including 10 first-round wins. The 31 year old is likely to enter the WBC's top 15, making him a contender for more prestigious title shots.

Abdusalamov’s fight against Byarm was the first under the guidance of American trainer Danny Garcia, best known for working with former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz.

Byarm, 29, is a sparring partner for Tony Thompson, who will challenge Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday for the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight belts.

Friday's fight consigned Byarm to his second career loss, leaving him 13-1-2, with nine knockouts.
