Northern Ireland defender George McCartney has rejoined West Ham United from Sunderland, both clubs said Sunday.

McCartney signed a two-year contract, joining the newly promoted English Premier League side from Sunderland for the second time in his career.

He spent last season on loan at Upton Park, helping the team return to the top flight.

"It was great to be part of the side that won promotion for the club last season. It was a fantastic way to end the campaign last year and I am really looking forward to being back in the Premier League with West Ham,” McCartney said in comments on the West Ham website.

The Belfast-born player, 31, racked up 34 appearances for Northern Ireland before retiring from international football last year.

He was a product of the Sunderland youth system and spent eight years at the club before joining West Ham in 2006, only to return to the Stadium of Light two years later.

West Ham's other summer signings include goalkeepers Jussi Jaaskelainen and Stephen Henderson, as well as midfielder Mohamed Diame from Wigan Athletic.
