A Siberian city court on Thursday handed a three-year suspended sentence to a lawmaker who shot at a group of schoolchildren who accidentally hit him with a snowball.

Chernogorsk city councilor Alexander Katarev pulled a nonlethal firearm and fired several shots at three 12-year-old boys in March, injuring one in the leg.

Katarev, 36, a former member of the Russian Liberal Democratic Party, was ordered to pay 50,000 rubles ($1,700) in moral damages to the boy, as well as legal fees of 30,000 rubles. He was also ordered to pay 1,200 rubles to cover the boy's psychological counseling costs.

The court also banned Katarev, an IT teacher at a local school, from teaching for the next three years.
