Russian tennis player Mikhail Youzhny said on Sunday he was fortunate for the easy pass to the quarterfinals of the French Open he got when France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga withdrew because of injury after the first set.

"Today I was lucky," Youzhny said at a news conference after the match, adding that he had been aware Tsonga might be carrying an injury, but that did not make the fans' favorite any less of a threat.

"A wounded animal can be doubly dangerous," he said. "It can happen that you play better with an injury, you are more focused."

In the quarterfinals the Russian No. 11 seed will meet the winner of Britain's Andy Murray, the fourth seed, and Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, ranked 15.

Youzhny said it made no difference which one he would meet in the next round.

"They are different, have different pluses and minuses, but I will have to play the winner," he said.
