MOSCOW, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - Film director Roman Polanski, arrested in Switzerland last month on child abuse charges, has been admitted to hospital, the Blick newspaper said on Saturday.

The Oscar-winning director, 76, best known for his films Rosemary's Baby (1968), Chinatown (1974), and the Pianist (2002), fled the U.S. in 1978 after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

He was arrested on September 26 after arriving in Switzerland for the Zurich Film Festival.

The Swiss paper, quoting an unnamed justice official, said that Polanski was being treated in Zurich for "pains in the stomach area." It also said that he was likely to remain in hospital for two or three days.

The U.S. is currently preparing its request for the director's extradition. Polanski's lawyers are seeking his release on bail.
