NIZHNY NOVGOROD, January 5 (RIA Novosti) - In the past 24 hours in the Russian Volga Federal District 24 people have been killed and 114 injured as a result of fires and road traffic accidents, the regional emergencies ministry said on Monday.

"In the past 24 hours 94 fires were reported on the territory of the Volga Federal District resulting in the deaths of 13 people, another 13 were injured. In addition, 61 road traffic accidents were recorded, as a result of which 11 people died and 101 people were injured, including two children," a statement said.

On January 1 the Volga Federal District emergencies ministry reported that on New Year's Eve some 35 people had been killed in fires and traffic accidents. A further 91 people were reported injured.

The ministry said that two people died in a house fire in the Saratov District on Sunday and in the Orenburg Region another two people died in a blaze in a four-story apartment block.

The ministry said the cause of the fires was being investigated.

The emergencies ministry in Moscow has also reported a spate of apartment fires in the Russian capital that have claimed the lives of at least 16 people since the New Year.

A high-ranking ministry official said on Sunday that the main cause for the fires was smoking in bed while drunk. He warned Muscovites to be extremely careful as "there is a week left until the end of the holidays."
