The sensation of the tournament goes to Russia's Maria Kirilenko, ranked 43 in WTA rankings, who defeated second seed and world No 3 Jelena Jankovic from Serbia in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

The promising 20-year-old Russian will meet her compatriot Yelena Dementyeva (9) Friday in a quarterfinal encounter, who ousted Thursday Marion Bartoli (5), the French finalist at this year's Wimbledon, in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.

Top seeded and world No 2 Maria Sharapova from Russia breezed through to the quarterfinals with an easy win over France's Tatiana Golovin (13) 6-0, 6-3.

Anna Chakvetadze (3) also enjoyed a straight sets victory in a match against Ai Sugiyama from Japan 6-4, 6-4 and will face American Venus Williams (10) in the next round.

The final Russian player to play in Friday's quarterfinals is Nadezhda Petrova (4), who defeated Thursday Katarina Srebotnik from Slovenia 6-3, 7-6 (12-10). Petrova will play Switzerland's Patty Schnyder (11) in the next round.
