* At the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships in Zagreb, Croatia (through August 5):
- Russia won gold in the 10m running target men's team competition with 1722 points. China took silver with 1716 points, and Sweden finished third with 1715 points
- Dmitry Romanov won the gold medal in the 10m running target junior men's team competition with 573 points. Myong Won Pak of North Korea took silver with 572 points, and Tomas Caknakis took bronze with 569 points
- Artem Khadjibekov won the gold medal in the 50m rifle 3-positions men's competition with 1273.53 points. Stevan Pletikosic (Serbia and Montenegro) took silver with 1269.1 points, and Lei Zhang (China) took bronze with 1268.4 points
* At the 28th European Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary (through August 6):
- Natalya Ishchenko won the gold medal in the synchronized swimming solo competitions. Gemma Mengual (Spain) took silver and Nathalia Anthopoulou (Greece) took bronze
- Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Yermakova won gold in the synchronized swimming duet competitions. Spanish pair Gemma Mengual and Paola Tirados won silver, and Greece's duo Eleftheria Ftouli and Evanthia Makrygianni finished third
- Russia won gold in the synchronized swimming team competitions. Spain took silver and Italy took bronze
- Anton Sanachev won the silver medal in the 25km open water swimming men's competition in 5h 10m 18.2s, trailing just 0.9 seconds to Gilles Rondy (France). Stephane Gomez (France) finished third with a time of 5h 10 m 19.3s
- Natalya Pankina won the silver medal in the 25km open water swimming women's competition in 5h 35m 25.1s. Angela Maurer of Germany won gold in 5h 35m 19.1s. Stefanie Biller (Germany) finished third in 5h 35m 29.5s
* Russia's national men's volleyball team beat Italy 3-0, 3-1 in the two away matches in Group C of the FIVB World League 2006 tournament.
