Moldova's breakaway region to hold foreign policy referendum

TIRASPOL, July 12 (RIA Novosti) - The Supreme Court of Moldova's unrecognized Transdnestr region has decided to hold a referendum on the province's foreign policy priorities on September 17, parliament said Wednesday.

The referendum initiated by parliament in late March is designed to determine Transdnestr's future foreign policy course: whether it wants international recognition as a republic and being annexed to Russia, or whether it should be part of Moldova.

The referendum will cost about $200,000, the parliament said.

Transdnestr, which has a predominantly Russian speaking population, declared independence from Moldova in a bloody conflict in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
