* At the 2006 UEFA European Under-17 Championship soccer finals in Luxembourg, ended May 14:

- Russia won the title by defeating the Czech Republic in the final 5-3 on penalties after the game ended 2-2 after extra time.

Spain won bronze, beating Germany in the third-place playoff match 4-3 on penalties (1-1 after extra time).

* At the 2006 IIHF world hockey championship that started May 5 in Latvia (through May 21):

Russia beat Switzerland 6:3 to secure first place in group F, regardless of results in its remaining game with Sweden May 15

* At the $1.7-mln Qatar Telecom German Open WTA tennis tournament in Berlin, Germany, ended May 14:

- Nadezhda Petrova, seeded No. 2 for the tournament, won the title by defeating 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 three-time German Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium in the final

- Fifth-seed pair Yelena Dementyeva and Flavia Penetta of Italy lost 2-6, 3-6 in the final against third-seeded Chinese duo Zi Yan and Jie Zheng, defending Australian Open champions

* Nadezhda Petrova has moved up one place to No. 3 in the WTA Tour rankings announced Monday by the WTA, the governing body of women's professional tennis, overtaking Maria Sharapova as Russia's No.1. Three other Russians are ranked in the top 10: Maria Sharapova (4), Yelena Dementyeva (8), and Svetlana Kuznetsova (10)

* Nikolai Davydenko has retained his eighth position in the new ATP Tour Race ratings announced by the ATP, the governing body of men's professional tennis. Three other Russians are ranked in the top 50: Igor Andreyev (30), Dmitry Tursunov (42), and Mikhail Yuzhny (49)

* At the $1.34-mln Internazionali d'Italia WTA Masters Series tennis tournament in Rome, Italy (through May 21)

- Vera Dushevina cruised into the singles second round, beating Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-1.

Nadezhda Petrova, seeded No. 4 for the tournament, Yelena Dementyeva (5), and Svetlana Kuznetsova (7) will start in the second round after receiving a first-round bye

* Alina Ivanova won the Prague International Marathon in 2h 29m 20s.

Caroline Chepkorir Kwambai of Kenya finished second in 2h 31m 8s, just two seconds ahead of compatriot Caroline Kilel Cheptonui

* At the M-Tel Masters chess tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria (through May 21):

- Russian grandmaster Pyotr Svidler, world No. 4 in the FIDE rankings, is in third place after Round 4.
