- Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, seeded 4 for the tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's singles by defeating compatriot Maria Kirilenko (20), 3:6, 6:4, 6:1

- Nadezhda Petrova (5) beat Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, 6:2, 6:0, to take on world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo of France in the quarterfinals of the women's singles

- Svetlana Kuznetsova (12) automatically advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's singles after Patty Schnyder (7) of Switzerland retired from the tournament due to a right ankle injury

* Russian basketball team Dynamo Moscow needs a draw today in its second leg of the two-way semifinals series with Hapoel Migdal of Israel to advance to the finals of the ULEB Cup tournament.
