Russian tennis players perform decently in Australia

MOSCOW, January 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Anastassia Rodionova advanced Monday to the second round of the Canberra Classic with the prize fund of $145,000.

Rodionova defeated Poland's Marta Domachowska 6-4 6-0, and she will next play against Yekaterina Bychkova, also a Russian player.

The tournament in Hobart (prize fund $145,000) was rather unlucky for another Russian, Yevgenia Linetskaya. She was defeated 1-6 6-3 2-6 by Alyona Bondarenko from Ukraine and dropped out.

Meanwhile, Russians Dinara Safina and Vera Dushevina started the Sydney Medibank International Women's Singles (prize fund $600,000) with victories.

Safina beat Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2 6-1, while Dushevina beat her compatriot Vera Zvonareva 6-4 3-6 6-1.

Russia's Anna Chakvetadze lost 6-3 6-3 to China's Zi Yan, and Elena Likhovtseva lost 6-4 3-6 6-3 to Ukraine's Yuliana Fedak.

During the next round in Sydney, Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova seeded sixth will play vs. Safina, and Nadezhda Petrova seeded fourth will play vs. Maria Kirilenko.

Dushevina will play against Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne who beat Switzerland's Martina Hingis 6-3 6-3 Monday.
