MOSCOW, May 31 (RIA Novosti) - The court sentenced former Yukos CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky to nine-year imprisonment for tax evasion and fraud. The harsh sentence did not surprise his parents, while his wife met the news crying.

"We expected something like that, and it doesn't surprise us even the least now," Marina Khodorkovsky, the convict's mother, said. She hopes a contrary verdict will come from the European Human Rights Court.

The reading of the verdict in Moscow's Meschansky district court came to the accompaniment of ironic chuckles from the defendants' relations. The judge reprimanded them on an occasion, warning they would be removed from courtroom if they did not keep quiet.

Khodorkovsky's wife burst into tears as his prison term was announced. Marina Khodorkovsky tried to calm down her daughter-in-law.

The friends and companions of the former Yukos CEO are withstanding from whatever comments on the sentence.

Yukos shareholder Leonid Nevzlin said: "I shall tell what I think of it only to foreign media."

Nevzlin presently lives in Israel. The Russian top prosecutor had him put on the international "wanted" list.
