MOSCOW, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow hails the appointment of Pascal Lamy of France to the post of the WTO (World Trade Organization) director general, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"He is known as an experienced negotiator, a good manager and real professional who understands difficult problems of the world trade system. These qualities are highly important for promoting the current round of international trade negotiations," ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko told journalists.

Lamy became WTO director general after his only rival, Uruguayan diplomat Carlos Perez del Castillo withdrew his candidacy.

Lamy will assume his term on September 1 when the term of incumbent director general, Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand, expires.
