5.5 MILLION UNEMPLOYED IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - As of late August, the number of unemployed in Russia totaled 5.5 million people or 7.4% of economically active population, the Federal State Statistics Service told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

About 1.6 million unemployed, including 343,300 people from the Chechen Republic, were registered in the state employment service.

As of late August, economically active population amounted to 73.5 million people, or 50% of the total Russian population.

Most people are employed by big and medium-sized companies. About 38.9 million people, or 57.5% of the employed worked in such companies in July. Moreover, there are 1.7 million secondary-job and contract employees (equivalent to the full-time job).
