WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States began enrolling volunteers in a clinical trial of a new vaccine developed by Moderna that targets genetic mutations in the coronavirus variant that first emerged in South Africa, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) said on Wednesday.

"The variant vaccine candidate developed by Moderna, mRNA-1273.351, differs from the currently-authorized Moderna vaccine in that it delivers instructions for making the SARS-CoV-2 spike that incorporates key mutations in the B.1.351 [South African] virus variant," NIH said in a press release.

The trial will enroll 210 healthy adult volunteers at four clinical research sites in the United States run by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the release said.

"Preliminary data show that the COVID-19 vaccines currently available in the United States should provide an adequate degree of protection against SARS-CoV-2 variants," NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said in the release.

The trial is underway "out of an abundance of caution" should an updated vaccine be needed, Fauci added.

The trial will enroll people ages 18 years and older who already have received the existing Moderna vaccine, as well as people ages 18 through 55 years who have not received any COVID-19 vaccine, the release said.

The coronavirus-related quarantine introduced in 19 French departments will spread to the whole country from 3 April for four weeks, President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday.

"The restrictions, which are already in force in 19 departments, will apply to the entire French territory from this Saturday for four weeks", Macron said in a televised address to the nation.

The president also announced the closure of schools and kindergartens across the country due to deteriorating situation with the coronavirus epidemic.

"We will close kindergartens and schools for three weeks", Macron said in a televised address to the nation.

At the same time, he stressed that it was necessary to preserve the learning.

"In this regard, the school timetable will be adapted so as not to leave our children alone. Specifically, this means that next week school classes will be held at home", the French leader said.

Over the course of several weeks, the epidemiological situation in France has been deteriorating, with increasing number of cases.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, the number of people infected with coronavirus in France has exceeded 4.5 million, over 95,000 people have died. In late December, France has launched vaccination campaign. According to the latest data from the health ministry, more than 8.5 million people received one vaccine shot and about 2.8 million received two.

Starting 20 March, quarantine was introduced in 16 departments of France, including the Paris region, but with more flexible rules than during the previous two lockdowns. A week later, a self-isolation regime was introduced in another three departments, including Lyon. In these territories, shops that do not belong to the priority list are closed. Movement between regions is restrcited as well. Cafes, restaurants, bars, museums, theaters, cinemas remain closed in the country since late October.

The majority of the UK population supports introducing "vaccine passports" for certain activities and professions despite recognising ethical and legal concerns, an Ipsos MORI UK KnowledgePanel poll published on Wednesday found.

"Our ... findings show that the public are once again prepared to do what it takes to get out of this pandemic. While they recognise the issues around vaccine passports, particularly their potential to exacerbate existing inequalities, their potential importance to ending lockdown and reopening the economy has won the argument for the majority of the British public", Kelly Beaver, managing director of public affairs at Ipsos MORI, was quoted as saying in a statement.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously ruled out the introduction of vaccine passports as discriminatory, though the government has been considering issuing COVID-19 certificates to facilitate the return of public events.

The poll showed particularly strong support for using vaccine passports for traveling abroad (78 percent of respondents), for visiting relatives in hospitals (74 percent) or care homes (78 percent), as well as for attending entertainment facilities such concert halls, theaters, pubs and restaurants.

Respondents also voted overwhelmingly in favor of making vaccine passports a requirement for such social jobs as medics (79 percent), teachers (69 percent), supermarket and pub service workers (65 and 63 percent, respectively).

At the same time, majority of respondents recognized the ethical and legal issues concerning vaccine passports, but thought that their potential benefits to the economy would outweigh such concerns (62 percent). People also voted saw vaccine passports as critical to getting businesses open (60 percent), to lifting lockdowns (61 percent) and encouraging citizens to get vaccinated (61 percent).

However, half of the respondents shared the concern that vaccine passports may lead to bigger inequalities as they would restrict people who haven't received the vaccine. Among those who responded negatively to the idea of the vaccine passports were predominantly younger people, people from ethnic minorities and those from more deprived areas.

The Ipsos MORI poll was conducted online from March 18 to March 24 in the UK and covered 8,352 people over age of 16.

The number of COVID-19 cases continues to increase as the most recent data showed a nearly 12 percent growth in seven-day average number of people who tested positive for the virus, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky said in a briefing on Wednesday.

"CDC’s most recent data shows that the seven-day average of new cases is slightly less than 62,000 cases per day. We continue to see an increase and this is almost a 12 percent increase from the seven-day period prior", Walensky said.

Coronavirus-related hospitalisations also continue to increase with an average of 4,928 admissions per day, up from 4,644 admissions in the prior seven-day period, Walensky added.

CDC data also showed that the seven-day average of virus-related deaths from the coronavirus decreased from 960 to 931 deaths per day.

Georgian health authorities are studying the death of another medical worker allegedly caused by an AstraZeneca vaccine jab she received two weeks earlier, Georgian Health Minister Ekaterina Tikaradze said on Wednesday.

The minister noted that the death of the doctor occurred in a hospital in the capital of Tbilisi.

"The regulatory agency is currently working on the site, but according to the initial investigation, a direct link between the vaccine and the death has not been established at this stage. An investigation is underway, the information will be available later", Tikaradze said at a briefing.

According to local media reports, the deceased doctor had heart issues but did not display any side effects after being administered the AsytaZeneca dose.

Earlier in March, the Interior Ministry launched a probe into the death of a 27-year-old nurse who was placed in an intensive care unit presumably with an anaphylactic reaction to an AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine shot and later passed away. The incident reduced people's trust in the country's vaccination campaign. Nonetheless, the Health Ministry has called on the population to continue to participate in the program to avoid a third coronavirus outbreak.

Georgia's immunization campaign uses AstraZeneca and Pfizer coronavirus vaccines. Prior to Wednesday, it has involved only such population groups as medical personnel and the elderly aged over 65.

To date, the country has confirmed over 280,000 coronavirus infections with the death toll at more than 3,700.

Clinical trial data on Chinese coronavirus vaccines Sinopharm and Sinovac meets efficacy standards set by the World Health Organisation, the UN agency's lead expert on immunisation said Wednesday.

The vaccine makers shared their data with the WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation last week, Alejandro Cravioto told reporters in Geneva.

"The information that the companies shared publicly at the meeting last week clearly indicates that they have levels of efficacy that would be compatible with the requirements", he said.

Cravioto added that both vaccines lacked data on trials in elderly patients and people with comorbidities. He stressed that further safety and efficacy studies were needed to assess the impact of the shots on sub-populations.

Israel plans to start vaccinating teenagers aged 12-16 as soon as necessary permissions are received, Israeli Health Ministry spokeswoman Anat Danieli told Sputnik.

"After obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals (from EMA, FDA) confirming that the vaccine is effective and safe for children, the vaccination process will begin, given the availability of the required quantity of the vaccine", Danieli said.

Earlier in the day, Pfizer and BioNTech pharmaceutical companies said that their vaccine had demonstrated nearly 100 percent efficacy and robust immune responses during phase 3 trial of more than 2,200 adolescents aged 12-15 that exceeded results of earlier trials of participants aged 16-25.

The companies announced plans to submit the data to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to receive emergency use authorisation for this age group. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is currently authorized for individuals who are at least 16 years old.

According to Ynet, Israeli Health Minister Yuli Edelstein called this announcement by Pfizer and BioNtech good news and said that the Israeli government should approve the procurement of an additional batch of the vaccine.

Yemen has received 360,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the first batch, Ali Al-Walidi, a spokesman for the internationally recognised government's health ministry, told Sputnik, adding that the next shipment may be delivered in May.

"[A total of] 360,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived today at the Aden airport in the first batch. During the next two months, 1,000,600 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive. And if other vaccines get the approval from the World Health Organization [WHO], and they match the temperature that we can provide for the vaccine [storage], we will definitely accept them", al-Walidi said.

The official expressed hope that the second batch will be delivered to Yemen in May.

"We expect the second shipment to arrive in May. Throughout 2021, we will receive 20 percent of our country’s vaccine share provided through the COVAX mechanism, and it amounts to 12 million doses", al-Walidi added.

Al-Walidi also pointed out that the coronavirus-related situation in Yemen remains critical and accused the rebel Houthi movement of concealing real scale of the COVID-19 infection in the movement-controlled areas.

"Until this moment, they [Houthis] are masking the situation. Our last meeting with a WHO representative took place yesterday, and with a UNICEF official on Monday. We talked that it is unacceptable to keep disease data in secret, as well as its consequences in these areas", al-Walidi said.

The Yemeni government makes great efforts in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, with the support of its partners, including Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, the official noted.

To date, Yemen’s government health authorities have registered 4,357 COVID-19 cases, including 888 deaths. The number of recoveries now stands at 1,676.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The number of Americans abiding by social distancing rules dropped by 9 percentage points to just 38 percent as the rollout of coronavirus vaccines continued across the country, a new Gallup poll showed on Wednesday.

“In the past month, there have been eight- or nine-point drops in the percentages of Americans who say they are avoiding public places like stores or restaurants (48%), small gatherings of people (45%), events with large crowds (62%) and travel (57%),” Gallup said in a press release.

Compared with a year ago, when almost every state had issued stay-at-home orders, the percentages avoiding these places are down roughly 30 percentage points, and are the lowest Gallup has measured since March 13-15, 2020, before many states issued those "lockdown" orders, the release said.

Among fully vaccinated adults 34 percent said they are completely or mostly isolating, compared with 47 percent of partially vaccinated adults and 46 percent who plan to get vaccinated but have yet to receive the first jab, the release added.

Meanwhile, adults who do not plan to get vaccinated remain the least likely to socially isolate, with only 23 percent doing so, according to the release.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) - A first-instance court in Brussels obligated the Belgian government to lift the coronavirus restrictions within 30 days over "absence of legal basis" for imposing the restrictions, Belgian newspaper LeSoir reported on Wednesday.

The court ruled that the government had no legal basis to close restaurants, cultural and sports organizations, introduce limitations on movement, and suspend school operations, since the 2007 law, cited in the governmental decree, does not envision these exact steps.

The government can challenge the court ruling.

Around three weeks ago, the Human Rights League organization filed a suit against the measures introduced to curb the spreading of the coronavirus, saying that restrictions infringe on fundamental freedoms.
