Since January, the EU has been facing delays in the deliveries of vaccines as producers fail to meet the growing demand. In early March, the bloc's immunization campaign facing another blow as a number of countries suspended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine over reported adverse effects, namely the development of blood clots.

The global death toll from the coronavirus infection has topped 2.699 million; more than 122 million cases of the infection have been detected, according to Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media and other sources.

The United States remains the hardest-hit country in the world, with more than 29.7 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic erupted. It is followed by Brazil (over 11.7 million cases) and India (more than 11.5 million cases).

Meanwhile, European countries are resuming inoculation with the AstraZeneca vaccine after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) found no evidence that the jab was associated with an increased risks of blood clotting. The vaccine has lately been under intense scrutiny in light of reports about some recipients developing blood clots after vaccination.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The numbers of Polish citizens willing to receive a jab of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine have decreased due to fears of side effects, Michal Dworczyk, head of the Prime Minister's Office and government plenipotentiary for the national vaccination program, said on Saturday.

The AstraZeneca vaccine has been under intense scrutiny over the recent weeks in light of reports about some recipients developing blood clots after immunization.

"In recent days, the number of people registering for AstraZeneca vaccination has dropped by several dozen percent," Dworczyk said at a press conference in Warsaw, noting that the number of people who do not show up for the vaccination has been growing.

He noted that at the moment the authorities had at disposal of several hundred thousand doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which are not used due to lack of patients. Besides, the official went on, those who avoid receiving a jab now, "go to the end of the queue" for the vaccination.

The British variant of the COVID-19 virus presents a growing threat in the United States and now accounts for up to 30 percent of cases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci said in a White House briefing on Friday.

"This [B.1.1.7] variant, as you know, is every day getting more and more dominant in our own country," Fauci said. "The first US cases were detected in the United States in Colorado at the end of December of 2020 and since then has been detected in 50 jurisdictions in the United States, and likely accounts now for about 20 to 30% of the infections in this country, and that number is growing."

The surge in the number of cases in many European countries, Fauci added, is directly related to B.1.1.7 variant making it a growing concern in the US.

As of today, the US has 29.6 million cases reported and almost 540,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Secretary-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday expressed concerns about a worrying trend in the development of the coronavirus pandemic, saying that the number of infections is growing in most regions.

"Cases are increasing in most regions. These are worrying trends as we continue to see the impact of [new coronavirus] variants, opening up of societies, and inequitable vaccine rollout," Tedros said at a press briefing.

Over the past week, the number of coronavirus cases continued to increase globally, with over 535,000 infections being reported over the last 24 hours, according to the latest data provided by the WHO. Most cases were registered in the Americas and Europe.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has discussed cooperation on the fight against the coronavirus pandemic with the heads of the European Commission and European Council, Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, during a video conference, the presidential office said on Friday.

"During the talks, the sides discussed the development of relations between Turkey and the EU, as well as joint steps to combat the [coronavirus] pandemic," the presidential office said in a statement.

The Turkish leader also expressed hope that the report on his country, which is set to be presented at the EU summit next week, would contain objective and constructive proposals on the future relations between Brussels and Ankara.

"Having stressed that in order to advance cooperation, it is necessary to launch all mechanisms and resume high-level dialogue, president Erdogan noted that the renewal of the migration agreement [signed on] March 18 [in 2016] is the basis for positive work on the agenda," the statement read.

Under the widely-criticized migration pact, which marks its fifth anniversary this year, Turkey pledged to stem the migration flow from the south in exchange for 6 billion euros ($7.2 billion) in aid. Despite strong criticism toward the deal, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell this week defended it as "the key framework for cooperation on migration."

The World Health Organization (WHO) currently does not see a decline in COVID-19 cases around the globe, WHO Representative to Russia Melita Vujnovic told Sputnik on Friday, adding that the global health body rather records growth in cases in regions like Europe.

"If we look at the current situation now, we can still see that we are not seeing a global decline, but rather, as in Europe, an increase in the number of cases," Vujnovic said.

She also said that it is unlikely that the world will manage to beat the COVID-19 pandemic this year.

Seychelles approved the use of Sputnik V, a Russian COVID-19 vaccine, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RFID) said on Friday.

"The RDIF announces the registration of the Russian vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik V in the Republic of Seychelles. The European Union has approved 340 requests for export of coronavirus vaccines from member states from late January to mid-March, Miriam Garcia Ferrer, the European Commission spokesperson for trade and agriculture, said on Friday.

"So the latest update I can provide is that from the 30th of January to the 16th of March we approve 340 export requests for authorization with member states and one was rejected," the spokesperson said, adding that the bloc "works hand in hand with member states to make sure they have access to vaccines in best conditions possible."

Earlier in the month, the EU was reported to have delivered 34 million doses of coronavirus vaccines to dozens of third countries, with the United Kingdom being the biggest importer, despite supply shortages among member states. The situation prompted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to threaten to block vaccine exports to the UK, causing tensions with London.

Meanwhile, the bloc's vaccination drive continues to drag behind countries like the US, the UK and Israel, with 9.8 percent of adults vaccinated, compared to the UK's 48 percent or Israel's 55 percent.

Hungary will extend anti-COVID restrictions for a week, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said.

"Epidemiologist experts have told us that this is not the moment for easing restrictions … Restrictions will remain in effect for one more week," Orban said, as quoted on the government website.

The prime minister added that the lifting of restrictions must be linked with the number of vaccinations. According to him, to make new steps, Hungary has to inoculate 2.5 million people, in other words, all those who are at the age of more than 65 years.

Hungary registered about 550,000 COVID-19 cases, more than 17,800 people died and more than 364,800 cured. Some 1.5 million people were inoculated, around 444,000 of them got a second vaccine dose.

In early February the government prolonged all quarantine measures until 15 March. A curfew, limits of public gatherings and mask-wearing requirements were introduced, restaurants and cafes were closed for visitors and only shops with essential goods remained open.

The authorities of India's capital territory of Delhi on Friday announced a decision to extend the working hours of vaccination centers over a sudden surge in new cases of COVID-19, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said.

"In order to accelerate the pace of COVID vaccination, it has been decided that timings of functioning of the COVID vaccination centers should be increased," the document prepared by the government read.

According to the document, all government hospitals in Delhi will keep vaccination sites functioning until at least 09:00 p.m. (15:30 GMT).

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said that adequate manpower will be deployed to ensure proper functioning of the vaccination facilities.

After India witnessed a reduced number of cases in the last few months, the infections have once again spiked in several parts of the country earlier in March. India is currently in the third position in the world in terms of the number of cases of the infection.

Around seven million people got their first dose of the two-shot COVID-19 vaccine in Germany while about three million have received both shots, German TV channel ZDF reported on Friday.

The authorities are now mulling the extension of the lockdown amid the third COVID-19 wave. The situation with the country's vaccination campaign worsened after inoculation with AstraZeneca vaccine was temporarily suspended to investigate reports of possible side effects.

On Thursday, Jens Spahn, the German health minister, said that the vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine will resume on Friday.

Vaccination campaign kicked off in Germany last December. According to the national plan, during the first stage, Germany will vaccinate citizens over 75 years of age, the personnel of hospitals and nursing homes. However, million doses were lying in warehouses, as the usage of AstraZeneca was permitted only for citizens below the age of 65 years.

The French National Authority for Health (HAS) has recommended resuming the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine but only for people who are aged 55 years or older, the Parisien newspaper reported on Friday.

"Following the opinion of EMA [European Medicines Agency], HAS greenlights the resumption of vaccination with AstraZeneca for people aged 55 and more. Thanks to all the doctors and pharmacists who will be called up today to continue the vaccination campaign," Health Minister Olivier Veran wrote on Twitter.

This particular age restriction is related to the fact that the rare cases of blood clotting disorders were recorded in people under 55 years old.

France, like many other European countries, suspended the use of the vaccine over blood clot concerns earlier this week. On Thursday, the EMA said that it had found no evidence that the vaccine is associated with increased risks of blood clot events, prompting member states to resume inoculations with the drug.

Norway’s police have opened an investigation into Prime Minister Erna Solberg who possibly breached coronavirus restrictions by gathering her extended family to mark her 60th birthday.

Norway’s police have opened an investigation into Prime Minister Erna Solberg who possibly breached coronavirus restrictions by gathering her extended family to mark her 60th birthday.

The potential breach happened in February, when the extended family of 14 gathered at a ski resort to celebrate Solberg’s birthday. According to media reports, though the relatives were accommodated in two separate apartments, they dined together twice, thus breaching coronavirus restrictions. On Thursday, the prime minister offered her apologies, saying that she "should have known the rules better" and expressing her regret.

"The investigation will clarify what has actually happened and whether this may be a violation of either local or central regulations," the southeast district police said, as quoted by Norway Today.

The prosecuting authority will then weigh whether to take further legal steps.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) could authorize Russia's Sputnik V vaccine against the coronavirus in the second half of May, a source in Berlin, who is familiar with the negotiations, told Sputnik on Friday.

"If everything is prepared, the EMA approval may be granted in two months approximately," the source said.

Germany may have to reimpose tough coronavirus restrictions after seeing incidence rates go up, Health Minister Jens Spahn said Friday.

"The rising number of cases may mean that we will not be able to take further steps toward reopening. On the contrary, we may even have to go backward," he told a news conference.

Daily cases in Germany rose to the two months’ high of 17,504 on Thursday, with 227 people dying from the virus. The figures for Friday were only slightly lower — respectively 17,482 and 226.

Karl Lauterbach, a senior health expert, estimated that at the current pace of the virus’ reproduction in the population the eventual lockdown would have to be extended by two weeks for every week that the nation delays the inevitable.

"You can twist and turn it however you want but we must go back into the lockdown," he said.

Lars Schaade, the vice president of the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases, said it was obvious that infection cases were growing exponentially again. He urged Germans not to travel during the Easter vacation period.

Researchers from Germany’s University of Greifswald have established that blood clotting reported after vaccinations with AstraZeneca coronavirus shots results from the body’s defense mechanism triggered by the inoculation, the NDR broadcaster reported.

The researchers came to the conclusion after studying samples of six patients who developed blood clots following inoculations with AstraZeneca. The analysis showed that the vaccine activates platelets in the body.

This mechanism is usually activated during wound healing, when the blood begins to clot and the wound closes. However, in some patients, vaccination triggers this mechanism, which leads to the formation of blood clots in the brain.

The description of this mechanism paves the way for developing a course of treatment, including drugs that help against thrombosis. At the same time, the broadcaster warns against consuming such drugs without prescription.

The findings of the study will be published in The Lancet.

Participants of the Taliban negotiating team for intra-Afghan peace talks have been inoculated with the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine while in Qatar, Suhail Shaheen, a member of the team, said on Friday.

"Yes, we [are] vaccinated. In Qatar, Pfizer [vaccine] is used," Shaheen said at a press conference in Moscow.

The Afghan government and the Taliban are having parallel peace talks in the Qatari capital of Doha and in Moscow. Some negotiators stayed behind in Qatar, while others came to Russia for the crucial international peace conference.

A 27-year-old Georgian nurse, who slipped into a coma after receiving the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, died on Friday, a spokeswoman for a Tbilisi hospital told Sputnik.

On Thursday, media reported that the nurse in the southwestern city of Akhaltsikhe was placed in an intensive care unit, presumably with anaphylactic reaction. She was taken to a Tbilisi clinic in serious condition.

"Unfortunately, I confirm the information about the woman's death. She was in a shock condition," the spokeswoman said.

The nurse's death was first reported by the Rustavi 2 broadcaster.

Georgia started vaccinating its frontline health workers against COVID-19 earlier this week, a few days after the country received its first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The news comes as a growing number of countries, particularly in Europe, are paused administering the AstraZeneca vaccine over reports of severe post-inoculation side effects, particularly the development of blood clots.

UK minister for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden, said on Friday that the government is considering issuing COVID-19 certificates to facilitate the return of sports fans into the stadiums.

"We’ll be testing whether we can use COVID certifications to help facilitate the return of sporting events," Dowden told Sky News broadcaster.

The sports minister said, however, that no final decision has been taken so far, but that he is working through the details with the minister for the Cabinet Office, Michael Gove, who is leading the government’s review of COVID-19 vaccine and testing certification due to be published on 21 June.

Dowden said, however, that the eventual certificate would not be a vaccine passport, which has already been ruled out as discriminatory by prime minister Boris Johnson, but a way to prove that a person attending a sporting event has had the vaccine or successful negative test result.

"It may be one of the things that could help ensure that we could get more people back into stadium," he stressed.

According to Johnson’s roadmap out of the current lockdown, which started on 8 March with the reopening of schools in England, from 17 May, indoor events will be capped at 50 percent capacity or 1,000, whichever is lower, and for outdoor events, the limit will be 50 percent capacity or 4,000, whichever is lower.

Larger outdoor venues such as football stadiums will be allowed up to 10,000 people or be a quarter full, whichever is lower.

The English Football League has estimated in around £200 million ($279 million) the losses caused by the ban on fans attending live matches during the 2020/21 season.

Sputnik V has thus become the fourth vaccine approved by the Philippines following the drugs developed by Pfizer/BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Sinovac.

The Philippines has confirmed more than 640,000 coronavirus cases so far, with over 12,000 fatalities.
