The West African nation of Guinea received a batch of 60 Sputnik V vaccines against the coronavirus on an experimental basis, media reported Wednesday.

The country’s National Health Security Agency (ANSS) said that it began a pilot phase of testing of the vaccine Wednesday, according to the Africa Guinee news outlet.

“In agreement with the Russian authorities who have already started vaccinations at home, the Guinean government has succeeded in obtaining 60 doses for Guinea, on an experimental basis," the outlet quoted a spokesman at the ANSS as saying.

Defense Minister Mohamed Diane was among the first to be inoculated. Diane posted a picture of himself receiving the shot on his Facebook page and added a caption emphasizing his trust in the research and scientific progress.

The vaccine will be administered to volunteers over the age of 50 as authorities test effectiveness before deciding on a roadmap for widespread vaccination, ANSS said.

Guinea has so far registered over 13,000 cases and 80 deaths from COVID-19 in a country of 12.77 million people.

Only two people have been administered to hospital with COVID-19 complications after taking part in the clinical trials of a candidate vaccine against the disease produced by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, Jonathan Van-Tam, the UK's deputy chief medical officer, said on Wednesday citing preliminary data.

"There is already some preliminary data from the AstraZeneca program. There have been just two hospitalizations in the whole of the clinical trials program in patients who received the vaccine," Van-Tam said at a government press briefing.

According to the public health official, both individuals would have contracted COVID-19 before receiving their first shot of the candidate vaccine against the disease.

"One hospitalization occurred two days after the vaccine was given, so you can easily work out that the infection occurred before the vaccine was actually administered, and the second one occurred 10 days after the vaccine was given, and again, 10 days is not long enough for a vaccine to work … so they weren't really vaccine-preventable hospitalizations," Van-Tam remarked.

Earlier on Wednesday, the UK's public health regulator gave emergency use approval to the AstraZeneca/University of Oxford vaccine.

A 91-year-old patient died at a care home in the central Swiss canton of Lucerne several days after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech companies, Switzerland's medical regulator, Swissmedic, said Wednesday, adding that no link between the death and the vaccination was established.

On December 19, Swissmedic approved the use of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in Switzerland, saying that the benefits of receiving the vaccine outweighed the risks posed by inoculation. Switzerland launched mass vaccination on December 23.

"Several days after the vaccination against COVID-19, a 91-year-old person, who suffered from several acute diseases, died at the care home in the canton of Lucerne. Neither the medical record, nor the acute course of the disease suggested that there was a direct connection between the vaccination against COVID-19 and the death. The available comprehensive information points to the pre-existing diseases as the natural cause of the death," Swissmedic said on Wednesday.

The regulator added that it had not registered any side effects caused by the vaccine yet.

According to Johns Hopkins University, Switzerland has confirmed 4,197 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, with the total number of 442,481. The country registered 24,215 new COVID-19 infections over the past week.

Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said on Wednesday that he has been vaccinated against coronavirus.

"Today, I received the COVID-19 vaccine and wish everyone to stay safe and protected during the pandemic," Al Thani wrote on his Instagram account, posting a photo of himself while getting the shot.

Earlier in December, the Qatari Ministry of Public Health issued an approval of the COVID-19 vaccine by Pfizer and BioNTech for emergency use. The first phase of coronavirus vaccination in Qatar will end on January 31. All the leaders in the country's health ministry were also vaccinated. First of all, the vaccination is intended for elderly, people who suffer from chronic diseases and those who are at risk of becoming infected due to close contact with COVID-infected patients.

Vaccinations against coronavirus have also begun in other Gulf countries including the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain. In Kuwait, Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah was one of the first to be vaccinated against coronavirus, in Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, in Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The Pfizer vaccine is the second one allowed to be administered in Qatar. A supply agreement with US biotechnology company Moderna for its vaccine was signed in late October.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged the country's population to conduct their New Year celebrations "safely at home" amid a rapid rise in new COVID-19 cases linked to a new variant of coronavirus.

"I must ask you to follow the rules where you live tomorrow night and see in the New Year safely at home, that means not meeting up with friends or family indoors, unless they're in the same household or support bubble, and avoiding large gatherings of any kind," Johnson said at a press briefing.

The United Kingdom is currently experiencing a surge in new COVID-19 cases linked to a new strain of SARS-CoV-2. From Thursday, three-quarters of the English population will be subject to the country's strictest social distancing measures, also known as tier 4, following a government announcement earlier in the day.

On Wednesday, the country's health department registered 50,023 new positive tests for COVID-19, slightly below the single-day record of 53,135 cases set one day ago.

The United Kingdom, through its order of 100 million doses of a vaccine against COVID-19 produced by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, as well as supplies of Pfizer and BioNTech's vaccine, has enough doses to vaccinate every single adult in the country, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Wednesday.

Hancock spoke in parliament on the same day as the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency gave approval for the use of the so-called Oxford vaccine.

"We have a total of 100 million doses on order, which combined with the Pfizer vaccine, is enough to vaccinate every adult in the UK with both doses," Hancock said.

According to the health secretary, the UK will have more than half a million doses of the Oxford vaccine available from Monday, and more supplies are on the way.

"But today's news means that everyone who wants one can get a vaccine. We already have 530,000 doses available to the UK from Monday, with millions due from AstraZeneca by the beginning of February," Hancock remarked.

The United Kingdom became the first country in the world to roll out the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 after approval was given at the start of December.

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa on Wednesday came out of a two-week quarantine he went into after French President Emmanuel Macron tested positive for coronavirus.

The 59-year-old Portuguese politician was retested earlier in the day and the result was negative, his government said in a statement.

Costa spent the Christmas holidays in self-isolation following Elysee’s announcement on Macron’s illness on December 17, a day after the two leaders had lunch together.

The news that Macron had caught the highly contagious virus set off a wave of tests among EU leaders whom he met at high-level events in the weeks prior to his diagnosis.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Wednesday that he was ready to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible, but would stick to the national COVID-19 vaccination plan, which was developed by the country's medical authorities.

"I myself, to set an example, would receive [the vaccine shot] immediately, but I will respect the established priorities. We should respect the priorities of the vaccination plan," Conte said during a press conference on the results of 2020 held in Rome.

The prime minister expressed hope for the success of the national vaccination campaign, adding that Italy had responded well to the global challenge.

On Sunday, Italy started off the campaign by first vaccinating three employees of the Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Rome.

Earlier in December, Domenico Arcuri, Italy's special commissioner for the healthcare emergency, said Italy would distribute over 1.8 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine during the first phase of national vaccination. On the first day of the vaccination campaign, Italy will only immunize medical workers and hospital staff. Vaccination for the rest of the population will begin in January. Italians would receive coronavirus vaccine shots free of charge.

Three quarters of English residents will be subject to the country's strictest "tier 4" COVID-19 social distancing measures from Thursday, as the government seeks to halt the spread of a new strain of coronavirus that is believed to be more transmissible, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

"Yesterday alone, 53,135 new cases were registered, the majority of which are believed to be the new variant. Unfortunately, this new variant is now spreading across most of England, and cases are doubling fast. It is therefore necessary to apply tier 4 to a wider area," Hancock said in parliament on Wednesday.

According to the health secretary, the measures will come into force in the early hours of Thursday morning and will apply to millions of people.

"These changes will take effect from 00:01 tomorrow morning. The new variant means that three quarters of the population are now going to be in tier 4, and almost all of the country in tiers 3 and 4," Hancock added.

Boris Johnson's government first introduced tougher tier 4 social distancing restrictions in mid-December to combat a surge in new COVID-19 cases in southeast England believed to be linked to a new variant of coronavirus.

The restrictions advise residents to avoid travel except when it is necessary and forces hairdressers, entertainment and leisure venues, as well as non-essential shops, to close.

Norway's authorities have decided to extend air traffic suspension with the United Kingdom until at least January 2 due to risks associated with the discovery of a new coronavirus strain, the country's health ministry has said.

"The suspension of flights to and from the UK is extended until 05:00 p.m. [16:00 GMT] on January 2. It is possible that the ban will be extended beyond this date," the statement said.

According to the ministry, the extension of air traffic suspension was made to prevent the spread of the mutated strain of coronavirus, as well as to develop measures that will take effect after the reopening of air traffic.

Earlier in December, London announced that a new coronavirus strain was detected in the country, adding that the new variant can be up to 70 percent more transmissible than other SARS-CoV-2 variants. After the news, many countries suspended travel to and from the UK. There is no evidence that the new strain is more pathogenic.
