Coronavirus Live Updates: Total of Over 11 Million COVID-19 Cases Now Confirmed in US

The global death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed 1.3 million, with over 53.8 million infected worldwide. The most affected countries are the US (10.89 million infected, 245,000 deaths), India (8.7 million cases, 129,000 fatalities), and Brazil (5.8 million cases, and over 165,000 deaths).

In Europe, the pandemic is also on the rise, with France becoming the fourth in the world in terms of infected as the coronavirus tally closes in on 2 million. Many nations, including France, Germany, the UK, Austria, Hungary, and Belgium have announced or introduced lockdowns, in a bid to curb the disease.

The supply of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 to Venezuela is expected in January 2021, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said.

"Good results and news for our country - we guarantee the production of the [Sputnik V] vaccine [in Venezuela] and supplies starting from January," Rodriguez said on Sunday, during consultations with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro that followed her visit to Moscow.

On Friday, Reodriguez said that Venezuela expected to localize the production of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine on its territory.

Venezuela is taking part in the third phase of Sputnik V clinical trials.

In August, Russia became the first country in the world to register a vaccine against the coronavirus, dubbed Sputnik V, and developed by the Gamaleya research institute.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States has surpassed 11 million, while the death toll stands at over 246,000, according to the latest data from the Coronavirus Resource Center of the Johns Hopkins University.

As of 22:15 GMT on Sunday, there were 11,000,984 coronavirus cases in the US, including 246,006 deaths from COVID-19.

A total of 4,148,444 people have recovered from COVID-19 in the US, Johns Hopkins University data showed.

The United States has the largest number of confirmed coronavirus cases, as well as the highest death toll, of all the countries in the world.

US incumbent President Donald Trump has stopped focusing on the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in recent weeks in light of the presidential election, The Washington Post reported, citing sources.

According to the media outlet, several weeks before the November 3 election, Trump practically stopped dealing with issued related to the fight against COVID-19, shifting his focus directly to the election campaign.

Sources say that the incumbent president has even started to ignore the advice of his own experts in the field of health and medicine. A senior administration official told the media outlet that Trump had stopped to receive regular reports about the situation with coronavirus in the country. The president himself rarely reads the daily reports of the White House coordinator for the fight against COVID-19.

The news comes as the United States continues to be the worst-hit nation both in terms of the number of coronavirus cases (nearly 11 million) and fatalities (more than 245,000). Over the past several days, the United States has set new records of daily coronavirus cases.

Moscow has registered 72 deaths of patients infected with COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the Russian capital's death toll to 7,859, the city's coronavirus response centre said in a statement on Sunday.

"Another 72 patients, who were diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus infection, died in Moscow," the centre said.

In the previous day, 75 people infected with the coronavirus died in Moscow.

Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev was confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 and his duties will be temporarily performed by the first deputy minister of transport, Alexander Neradko, a ministerial spokesman said on Sunday.

"Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev has tested positive for coronavirus. In accordance with the requirements of Rospotrebnadzor, the head of the Ministry of Transport must observe self-isolation. His duties will be temporarily performed by the first deputy minister of transport and the head of Russia's federal aviation agency Rosaviatsiya, Alexander Neradko," the spokesman told reporters.

Prime Minister of Eswatini — a country in Southern Africa —  Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini said on Sunday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and begun self-isolation.

"I wish to inform the Nation that I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am asymptomatic and feeling but in isolation, in line with health protocols, and being supported by the Ministry of Health medical personnel at home," the minister said in a statement, published by the kingdom's government on Facebook.

The minister noted that he would continue working from home until he "is cleared from the virus."

So far, the country has confirmed as many as 6,095 COVID-19 cases, including 119 fatalities and 5,779 recoveries.

urkey has set a new record of daily coronavirus cases on Sunday, as 3,223 new cases were registered in the country, the Turkish Health Ministry said.

The previous record high was registered on Saturday and amounted to 3,116.

"Today, 3,223 new COVID-19 cases have been registered, the total number of those infected is 414,278," the ministry said in a statement.

Further 89 coronavirus patients have died in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 11,507. Another 3,439 patients are in intensive care.

The number of recoveries has climbed by 2,561 to 353,663 since the start of the pandemic, the ministry added.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the global scale has surpassed 54 million, the latest data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Coronavirus Resource Center showed on Sunday.

The exact number of coronavirus cases stood at 54,027,785 as of 12:12 GMT on Sunday. According to the JHU, more than 34.7 million people have recovered from the disease, while the COVID-19 global death toll is nearing 1,313,000.

The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on March 11. The biggest number of cases so far have been registered in the United States, India and Brazil.

Hundreds of coronavirus vaccination centers will be set up across Germany starting in December, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday, citing data from the health ministries of all 16 federal states of Germany.

According to the newspaper, the authorities hope for a quick start of mass vaccination in light of the recent positive results of the vaccine trials by German BioNTech biopharmaceutical company and US Pfizer.

Most federal states are planning to set up one to two vaccination centers per administrative district, and then one such center per district and out-of-district city, the newspaper reported, adding that it is also planned to employ mobile vaccination teams.

In the federal cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen, several vaccination centers will be opened. The German capital, in particular, according to the newspaper, is planning to open at least six such centers.

The newspaper added that some centers are expected to be housed at large exhibition halls.

Serbia will limit the work of food outlets and entertainment places from November 17 to December 1 to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Sunday following a government meeting on the epidemiological situation in the country.

"The government has decided to ban the work of restaurants, cafes, night clubs, shopping centers and shops from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. local time [20:00 to 04:00 GMT]," Brnabic said, adding that the ban does not concern pharmacies, food deliveries and gas stations.

At the same time, the government does not consider yet introducing a curfew, the prime minister added.

"If necessary, we will introduce this measure, but we are not thinking about it at the moment. We know that this will be the next measure, but every forecast shows that the measures taken so far will yield results, and the number of new infections will begin to decline," Brnabic said.

The Tunisian Health Ministry announced on Sunday the extension of measures to curb the coronavirus pandemic, including a curfew, for another three weeks, but allowing educational institutions to reopen.

In October, Tunisia introduced a nationwide curfew, shut transport links between the provinces, limited working hours of restaurants and cafes, suspended classes in schools and imposed a number of other restrictions amid a spike in domestic cases.

"Prime Minister [Hichem Mechichi] decided to extend the measures to fight the coronavirus for three more weeks. These measures do not concern educational institutions, they will resume operations while strictly complying with the healthcare protocols," the ministry said.

The ministry added that observance of social distancing and the mask regime would remain in force, with control over their implementation being tightened.

Iran sets a new record number of COVID-19 cases registered in a single day with over 12,500 new infections, Health Ministry Spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Saturday.

Appearing live on state broadcaster IRINN, Lari broke down Saturday’s figures: 12,543 new cases of infection and 459 fatalities, just three deaths short of the established record.

This takes the overall number of cases detected since February 19 to 762,068 with 41,493 deaths as a result.

Authorities have begun drawing up restriction measures to curb the spread of the disease. Varying degrees of hybrid lockdowns are set to go into effect across the country from November 21, depending on the severity of the epidemiological situations. Domestic travel between regions on public transportation has been restricted.

Iran joins the ranks of a slew of other countries that have been setting daily records of new infections in recent days.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has registered 22,572 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,925,825, the country's response centre said on Sunday.

"In the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 22,572 COVID-19 cases in 85 regions, of which 5,854 (25.9 percent) were detected with people showing no clinical symptoms", the response centre said, adding that the case count has reached 1,925,825.

Moscow reported 6,271 COVID-19 cases. The capital was followed by St. Petersburg with 1,944 cases and the Moscow Region with 812 cases.
