Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend a meeting of six signatories to the nuclear deal on the UN margins in New York on Wednesday, a source in the Russian delegation said.
"The minister will be participating in the meeting of the five nations and Iran on the nuclear deal," the source told reporters.
French President Emmanuel Macron said during a speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that the United States, Iran and other signatories of the nuclear deal as well as Middle Eastern countries should resume talks to avoid conflict.
"More than ever, I … believe that the time has come to resume negotiations between the United States of America, Iran, the signatories of the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] and the countries of the region which are first and foremost affected by the security and stability," Macron said.
The inaugural meeting of the Syrian constitutional committee in Geneva has been tentatively set for October 30, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said Tuesday.
"It has been agreed that the committee will start work in Geneva on October 30. This is not a fixed date. The UN special envoy will return to Damascus after the UN General Assembly wraps up and we will agree the details," he told the Syria TV channel.
The Syrian foreign minister also noted that the constitutional committee might draft a new constitution instead of amending the existing one.
Asked by the Syria TV channel if the committee would consider changes to the 2012 constitution, he replied, “That’s right.”
“But this does not mean they will not consider writing a new constitution because when you change even a single article you get a new constitution,” he explained.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in proposed on Tuesday to transform the demilitarization zone (DMZ) on the Korean peninsula into an international peace zone.
"Today ... I'd like to propose to the UN and to all member states the idea of transforming the DMZ that cuts across the Korean peninsula into an international peace zone," Moon Jae-in said in his address to the UN General Assembly.
The South Korean leader stressed that the DMZ had become a pristine ecological treasure trove throughout 70 years of military confrontation and vowed to work together with North Korea to inscribe the DMZ as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to Moon Jae-in, the DMZ could ultimately emerge as a centre for research on peace, peacekeeping, arms control and trust-building.
More effort is needed to stop an outflow of 4 million refugees from the Syrian province of Idlib even though the deal between Russia and Turkey to set up a demilitarized zone there remains in place, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
"We need to do everything possible to prevent a possible massacre in the city of Idlib and an immigration influx of 4 million. The memorandum we reached with Russia in Sochi still remains valid despite some setbacks. Turkey cannot bear another migration influx," he said.
"The world is greater than five [permanent UN Security Council members]. It is high time that we changed our current mentality... It bothers us like anyone else that the weapons of mass destruction are used as leverage in every crisis instead of their total elimination. The possession of nuclear power should either be forbidden for all or permissible for everyone," Erdogan said during his address to the UN General Assembly.
The United States will never proceed with the ratification of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, US President Donald Trump said during his remarks at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
"There is no circumstance under which the United States will allow international entities to trample on the rights of our citizens, including the right to self-defence. That is why this year I announced that we will never ratify the UN Arms Trade Treaty," Trump said.
"The future belongs to sovereign and independent nations who protect their citizens, respect their neighbours and honour the differences that make each country special and unique," US President Donald Trump said as he addressed the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.
"It is a fallacy to say that the Amazon is the heritage of humankind, and a misconception confirmed by scientists to say that our Amazon forests are the lungs of the world...The Amazon is not being devastated, nor is it being consumed by fire, as the media says," Bolsonaro told the UN General Assembly.
In his speech, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the world was in a state of "disquiet".
"Machines take their jobs, traffickers take their dignity, demagogues take their rights, warlords take their lives, fossil fuels take their futures and yet people believe in the spirits and ideas that bring us to this hall," he said.
