Afghanistan war veterans gathered near the Monument to Soldiers-Internationalists in Moscow to hold a march marking 30 years since the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the Central Asian country.

The Afghan campaign started in December 1979 and ended in February 1989, with Soviet forces in Afghanistan supporting the government against the US-backed opposition. Following the troops' withdrawal, a civil war in the country resulted in various militant groups, including the Taliban, being strengthened, and consequently also the US-led intervention in 2001.
