ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) — Defense cooperation needs to be expanded because of a "far from stable" security situation outside Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) borders, the Russian army's General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov said Thursday.
"Given that the situation at the external borders of the Commonwealth is far from stable, we are facing a common task of preventing the spread of terrorism into the CIS area," Gerasimov said at a meeting among regional chiefs of armed forces.
He underscored that "in the current difficult situation it is necessary to expand defense and security cooperation."
