MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UN World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes an EU donation worth some 800,000 euros (about $890,000) to support the WFP-headed Logistics Cluster in Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict in the country's southeast, the WFP said in a statement on Tuesday.
"This significant contribution from the EU is perfectly timed, allowing the WFP-led Logistics Cluster to continue reaching areas where many people do not have the means to secure their most basic needs," WFP Representative in Ukraine Dorte Ellehammer was quoted as saying by the WFP press service.
The Logistic Cluster is the WFP's coordination mechanism which oversees emergency responses in areas in need of humanitarian assistance. The European Union is a major donor to the project.
Kiev launched a military operation in Ukraine’s southeast in April 2014, after local residents refused to recognize the new Ukrainian authorities, which came to power as a result of what they viewed to be a coup.
In February 2015, a peace agreement was signed between the conflicting sides in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, however, sporadic shelling has continued in Ukraine despite the deal.
