BERLIN (Sputnik) – It is too early to talk about an end of the Vienna talks on Syria and Yemen after Saudi Arabia cut off diplomatic ties with Iran, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said Monday.
"There is hope that no setback will follow," Schaefer told reporters in Berlin. "It is too early to bury the Vienna process," he added.
The spokesman stressed that no progress in reconciliation talks on Syria and Yemen was possible without mutual concessions from Saudi Arabia’s Sunni authorities and the Shiite government of Iran.
Riyadh broke off ties with Tehran on Sunday following an attack on the Saudi embassy in Iran after Saudi authorities executed a prominent Shiite cleric.
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini warned the two main regional rivals on Sunday that security and stability in the Middle East was at stake, particularly with regard to the Syrian crisis and the common fight against Islamist militants.
