A Russian Mi-8 helicopter came under attack while conducting a search and rescue operation, searching for the crew of the downed Su-24 in Syria. One naval infantry soldier was reported killed, the helicopter destroyed by mortar fire.

The Russian General Staff said that two Mi-8s were involved in the operation to save the crew of the downed Su-24 bomber jet.

One helicopter was shot down, its crew evacuated to the Russian base at Hmeymim.

"A search-and-rescue operation involving two Mi-8 helicopters was carried out, charged with evacuating the pilots from the landing site. During the operation, as a result of small-arms fire, one of the helicopters was damaged, and forced to make a landing on neutral territory. One naval infantry soldier of contract service was killed," Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi, the head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, told reporters on Tuesday.

The officer noted that the "personnel from the search-and-rescue team and the helicopter's crew have been evacuated and are now located at the Hmeymim air base. The downed helicopter was destroyed by mortar fire from territory controlled by armed gangs."

"The search-and-rescue operation tasked with finding the crew of the downed Russian bomber continues," Rudskoi added, emphasizing that the territories in which the operation was conducted is believed to be controlled by radical rebel groups.

A Russian Su-24M Fencer jet crashed in Syria earlier in the day with two pilots aboard. Ankara claims that its F-16s shot down the plane because it violated the country's airspace. Russia has countered Turkey's accusations, President Vladimir Putin saying that the aircraft was 0.6 miles away from the Turkish border when it was shot down.

According to the Russian leader, the crashed aircraft was not posing any threat to Turkey when it was struck by an air-to-air missile from the Turkish jet.

Mikhas, Putin is patient but I guess he's restraining himself from acting angrily.

Send in Kadyrov and the Chechens to finish the job, Putin.
    • This is war crime. The West actions through their Frontman-Turkey and the terrorists groups on the ground, are calling for Russia Airstrikes on the Turkey-Syria border

this may be the time to redirect attention on Ukraine?

Russian people in Syria are doing so much for this world a lot of us even not aware of it. I am so sad about the pilot, they are trying to save our lives.

A very expensive mistake... Turkey has caused for itself.. NATO will only push Turkey further while they command from behind.. Until last Turkish soldier is gone..
    • cast235
It was the Syrian Turkmen. U.S, NATO want a safe heaven for opposition to finish Syria and end Assad. they desperate. But Russia lack of talk .. lack of forceful speeches..Not scream..but with resolve.. They desperate because U.S is about to fall ...The debt is too giant.. And already a pain to service.. Russia should ED the oil connection to Turkey.. Bring China and India in to seal the borders.
Thing is they think they downed the Rus jet, and are celebrating, and happy because U.S planes are superior to Russian.
Now they move in , assuring themselves that Russia won't dare do nothing. Next you know they going to Crimea.

dsecretebook, have you seen movie called "Braveheart"? there is a battle for Falkirk I think where English king with his troops fights against Scottish people and the king's hand says:
      - H: The archers are ready, sire.
      - King: Not the archers. My scouts tell me their archers are miles away and no threat to us. Arrows cost money. Use up the Irish. The dead cost nothing. And send the infantry and cavalry.

The Irish then "betray" the English king and flee to Scottish side. Then the battle goes on and once the English are winning the king calls for archers to shoot.
      And the hand asks him:
      - H: I beg pardon, sire. Won't we hit our own troops?
      - King: Yes, but we'll hit theirs as well. We have reserves. Attack!

And that's how English fight, always by other's hands. And the Turkish were already used by England in war against Russia in past, and not just once.

The new war tactic for the Russian presently is to use long range missiles carry by mobile trucks in Latakia, and point precisely to enemy combatants near the border with Turkey. Doing this, there is no need to use bombers (e.g. SU-24), which normally are used to bomb enemy combatants near border of countries because of its précised guided system. This is a matter to bomb proper targets but not to people in the order side of the border. This action was carefully elaborated to not antagonize the government of Turkey. This did not work, and the results were the lost of a SU-24, 2-pilots killed in the air, and a helicopter crew also killed.

Long range missiles (e.g. cruise missiles) must be fired from secured areas in Latakia coastline to bomb targets near the border with Turkey. It does not matter if missiles were out of precision or explode 3-4 meters inside Turkey. Turkey can claim that a missile has crossed its border but cannot shoot down any airplane. This is the way Russian must conduct its future operation in the province of Latakia.

      RIP
Condolences to the family and Russia.
But are we going to give in to the traitors and barbariansz
The best thing that can be done is to win the war and save syria from the like of erdogan and obama and those snakes in the gulf states.
Turkey - want to be attacked so they can call on NATO and make the war a wider war.
There are better ways to get Turkey - in the pocket.

Obama said he Russian was attacking the moderate fighter near the Turkey border and therefore it was right to shoot down the Russia fighter. He was not concerned about the moderate capturing the pilots, but tacitly supporting the killing of the pilots while still in the air against the Geneva Convention. Even the communist Viet Nam abides for this convection saving the life of senator McCain and looking after his injures.

Russia must stop asking for help to those supposedly friends. This remind me the wife of a friend, whose wife always did the oppose that the husband want she do to drive the husband out of the matrimonial home. Doing the opposite of the wishes of supposedly the only one enemy (Russia) is the best strategy to beat it. Please just stop to tell you enemy what you dearly want!

This is adding insult to injury. Erdogan and his double-dealing have opened Pandoras' Box. I fear the wrath of the Russians, I bet the Turkish people are pretty nervous now too. Perhaps, as one person posting here said, it is again time to nail Rus shields to the walls of Constantinople.

Baybars, To get the Turks attention, you have to hit their underground baths with a few 500 pound laser-guided bunker bombs down into their sewers. And who cares if they come out of there with towels on or not, right?

Hopefully it's only one person we are talking about, not any additional...

Time for payback with total eradication of the "rebels" as a goal. If terrorist warehouse Turkey loses an F16 or two, all the better.

vv Well I'd like to start a website: "Americans for Solidarity with Russian citizens". Let me emphasize many many Americans know what our degraded "leadership" is busy doing...supplying ISIS/ISIL, our fake "enemies" with weapons training and money, a plot hatched up in Israel and forced upon our coward traitors in the district of criminals. All through the open borders of Turkey, which hopefully will be bombed into oblivion sometime soon.
    • tanksbb
Seems to have been a coordinated effort between Turkey and IS.
    • altair451
Why would Russia be so stupid to send helicopters with no fighter escort?

You mean coordinated effort between Turkey and the US....oh! that has the same meaning.
