PARIS (Sputnik) — The European Union is not preparing a ground military operation in Syria, Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said Monday.
"We will not send European troops on the [Syrian] territory. It is clear that in this case it would be to some extend considered as a new crusade," Reynders said in an interview aired by the RTBF broadcaster.
Reynders called for a political solution to the Syrian civil war, adding that the involvement of Turkey, Iran and the Saudi Arabia was necessary for the conflict settlement.
On Friday night, extremists carried out several attacks across Paris, killing at least 132 people and injuring over 350. The Islamic State (ISIL) militants claimed responsibility for the attacks.
According to media reports, at least two suspects have been to Syria at some time in the past.
Following the attacks, France has launched a massive airstrike against ISIL positions in Syria, destroying a command center and a training camp in Raqqa.
