Russia is helping Syria escape the power games of imperialism, the leader of the European Communitarianist Party told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Anastasia Levchenko — Russia is helping Syria to shake off the West's political and business influence, which is creating chaos in the country and is seeking to control it, Orazio Gnerre, the leader of the European Communitarianist Party, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

“The role that the West plays in world politics is a deliberate release of chaos for the strategy of global control <…> The Middle East today, like Africa, is a region which suffers from the power games of big businesses and imperialism, and which cannot find an easy way out without the backing of the major powers that can help him to rise again. This is Russia's role for Syria,” Gnerre said.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011. Forces loyal to Assad have been fighting several opposition factions and numerous militant groups, including Islamic State (ISIL).

Russia Serious About Fighting Terrorists in Syria
The United States has been demanding Assad’s resignation and has been conducting airstrikes in Syria without approval from Damascus. US specialists have been training the so-called moderate opposition in the country within the framework of an international coalition that has been targeting ISIL positions in Syria since September 2014.

In late September, Russia began precision airstrikes against Islamic State militant group positions in Syria at the request of President Bashar Assad.

On Tuesday, Syria’s President Bashar Assad praised Russia’s contribution to the fight against terrorism in Syria and the whole Middle East region during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During his meeting with Assad, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to a diplomatic process in Syria that would involve all political factions as well as all religious and ethnic groups.
