Russia Not Restructuring Ukraine’s Debt - Prime Minister Medvedev

Russia is not going to restructure the loans issued to Ukraine, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Prime Minster commented on a recent law passed by the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, that allows Kiev to impose a moratorium on repayment of the country's foreign debts. The law will be in force until July 1, 2016.

"We have already said that we do not intend to restructure anything. That’s why, apparently, the Verkhovna Rada took these decisions, these frantic actions…" Medvedev said in an interview broadcast by Russian television on Saturday.

Medvedev added that Moscow's decision not to restructure Kiev's debt might influence other creditors not to lend money to Ukraine.

"I am sure that such decisions will affect, in the long run, the position of other creditors, the position of the other members of the International Monetary Fund, " the prime minister pointed out.

Russian banks will file lawsuits against Ukrainian companies to recover the debts they owe them, Russian Prime Minister said.

The prime minister underscored that Ukrainian companies borrowed sums from Russian banks, including those with state participation.

"It means that we also care about these debts. We will collect them. Banks will use all the tools available, including, of course, legal proceedings," Medvedev said.
