Romania needs more military equipment to deter Russia's actions amid the crisis in Ukraine, said retired four-star general Constantin Degeratu, former head of Romania's Armed Forces.

WASHINGTON, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - Romania needs more military equipment to deter Russia's actions amid the crisis in Ukraine, said retired four-star general Constantin Degeratu, former head of Romania's Armed Forces.

"We need right now three American squadrons to be moved back from the United Kingdom and Germany and Italy to Romania, because now we have no air power and no time to buy new aircraft, and no time to prepare new squadrons and they are sleeping there in United Kingdom with no mission," Degeratu said at an event at the Georgetown University in Washington, DC on Tuesday.

This would be a temporary deployment, Degeratu stressed.

"We need temporary deployment of American Destroyer in the Black Sea region in the moment when Russia is increasing development of all military capabilities," he said.

Romania also requires two Patriots as well as three brigades for territorial defense.

"It could be a problem of NATO development of their capability to defend the territory of NATO countries, and that is the first mission of NATO and is not a secret for Russia," he said.

Degeratu said that there are only two languages that could be understood in Moscow, and they are Russian and force.

"We have to be strong enough to deter any adventure decision of Moscow," he concluded.

In the last several months the Russian Armed Forces held a number of military drills in the western regions of the country.

The exercises, especially those held close to the border with Ukraine, were criticized by some western countries as well as NATO.

Relations between Russia and NATO have been strained since the alliance accused Russia of meddling in the Ukrainian conflict, a claim Russia has repeatedly denied.
