MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Foreign Ministry welcomes the decision of the Libyan authorities to hold parliamentary elections scheduled for June 25, according to the Ministry’s official statement issued on Tuesday.

“Convinced that overall stabilization of the political situation in Libya is possible only driven by broad national consensus, we consider the decision of the Supreme Election Commission a step that could further promote the political process in this country,” the Ministry’s official statement said.

“We reaffirm our consistent support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya. We advocate for early stabilization of the situation in that country, and the aspirations of the Libyan people to build a modern democratic state. We are prepared to continue to promote this in the bilateral and multilateral formats,” the message concluded.

Last week, the situation in Libya had escalated sharply after the so-called militants from General Khalifa Haftar’s rebel group attacked Islamists in Benghazi killing dozens.

After the civil war and the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi situation in Libya remains tense. A large number of armed tribal groups continue to operate in the country. In some areas, equipment and combat capabilities of these units is significantly superior to that of the police.
