WASHINGTON, July 25 (RIA Novosti) – An award-winning US documentary maker and the musical partner of Nine Inch Nails band leader Trent Reznor are collaborating on a documentary about orphans in Ukraine, according to the official project page on the crowd sourcing, fundraising website Kickstarter.com.

Director Steve Hoover, who won this year’s Grand Jury Award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival for his documentary “Blood Brother” plans to shoot “Gennadiy,” a film about a Ukrainian children’s activist in the city of Mariupol. Atticus Ross, known for his collaborations with Reznor on soundtracks and albums, will compose the score.

“Gennadiy” focuses on Gennadiy Mokhnenko, an operator of a Ukrainian orphanage who conducts unorthodox, nocturnal “raids” to rescue children from alcohol and drugs, according to the official site.

The filmmakers are currently raising funds via social media, including Kickstarter, part of a new wave of directors circumventing traditional studio support. Earlier this week, the Oscar-nominated US director Spike Lee started his own crowd sourcing campaign on Kickstarter to raise $1,250,000 for a new feature film.

The “Gennadiy” filmmakers have raised $23,151 thus far on Kickstarter towards their goal of $40,000.
