The International Court of Justice on Friday refused to consider a case filed by Georgia accusing Russia of ethnic cleansing in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The International Court of Justice on Friday refused to consider a case filed by Georgia accusing Russia of ethnic cleansing in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Court president Hisashi Owada said the decision was taken "in the absence of evidence of a genuine attempt" by either Russia or Georgia to negotiate a settlement to the dispute before complaining to the court.

Georgia claims Russian forces and allied militias killed thousands of ethnic Georgians and displaced 300,000 more in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in over two decades leading up to a five-day war in August 2008.

Moscow rejects the claims.
