Egypt's military authorities announced on Tuesday that the work on amending the country's constitution would take 10 days.

The head of the higher military council, Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, met with a panel of experts tasked with proposing changes earlier today.

On Sunday, Egypt's new leaders suspended the current constitution, earlier changed to allow ousted President Hosni Mubarak's to strengthen his grip on power.

Mubarak stepped down and handed over power to the country's military last week after 18 days of mass protests.

The military say the panel's proposals will be put to a referendum.

The eight-member committee, led by a former judge, is made up of legal experts, but also includes a figure from the banned Islamic group the Muslim Brotherhood.
