TBILISI, May 29, (RIA Novosti) - More than a thousand people had the roofs of their homes torn off by gale-force winds in three regions in western Georgia, local officials said Tuesday.

The storm-driven winds, which raged for more than 10 hours, tore off roofs and downed power and telephone lines in the Samegrelo, Svanetia and Imereti regions before abating early Tuesday. There has been no word of any casualties, officials said.

Traffic in central Tbilisi was paralyzed Monday night as the result of torrential rains, although no flooding was reported, the mayor's office said.
