Straight Outta the Woods: Bear Walks Around a Town in Kamchatka
10:00 GMT 05.06.2017 (Updated: 19:30 GMT 19.10.2022) Residents of the Russian town of Vilyuchinsk woke up on June 5 to find a big brown bear wandering among their apartment buildings. Luckily, it was too early in the morning, so the wild animal didn’t hurt anyone.
Police and animal control specialists had a tough time chasing the bear out of town. Such "invasions" happen in the region from time to time: the Kamchatka Peninsula is home to some 20,000 brown bears, about one for every 16 people. They become more active in the summer and can travel thousands of kilometers in search of food.
