Moby Dick Meets Modern Technology

Cameras installed on a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) caught a breathtaking encounter with a massive sperm whale under the abyss of the Gulf of Mexico.

It was a rare encounter, considering the elusive nature of sperm whales. When the ROV was around 600 meters (2000 feet) deep, cameras caught a glimpse of the giant sea creature. The whale circled around the ROV for a few minutes, before realizing the vehicle was not a giant squid it was probably looking to eat.

Sperm whales are one of the fiercest predators in the ocean. They are known for holding their breath up to 90 minutes and can dive as deep as 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) in search of their prey.
