On September 25, a Russian Pacific Fleet unit led by the Guards guided missile cruiser Varyag arrived on an unofficial five-day visit at Maizuru port in Hokkaido, Japan.
The purpose of this mission was to strengthen military cooperation with Asian-Pacific countries and to show the Russian naval flag.
The cruiser Varyag is a descendant of the legendary Russian warship, whose crew became famous in the Battle of Chemulpo Bay during the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War. The Varyag has a multi-role missile system for destroying surface and air targets. It is also fitted with torpedo tubes and several artillery pieces. NATO calls the warships aircraft carrier killers.
