The Russian centre for control and monitoring of the coronavirus stated on Thursday that an elderly woman infected with the disease had died in Moscow due to a number of chronic illnesses.
"The 79-year-old woman was hospitalised on 13 March, but was transferred a day later to a private healthcare organisation at the insistence of her relatives. After testing positive for the coronavirus, she was transferred to an infectious diseases hospital, where she was put in an isolation ward and underwent comprehensive treatment," Svetlana Krasnova, the chief doctor of the infectious diseases hospital №2, said.
According to the chief doctor, the woman suffered from diabetes, atherosclerotic vascular disease, and high blood pressure.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) on March 11 declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus a pandemic. More than 200,000 people in about 160 countries are infected worldwide, over 8,000 have died. Russia has so far registered 147 cases of COVID-19.
