A group of Russian animal rights activists established the first animal shelter for cows in the country.

More often than not cows today are treated as little more than a source of meat and dairy products, to be casually disposed of when they’re no longer useful.

A group of Russian activists have decided to do something about the situation and came up with an interesting idea. Instead of staging protest or trying to raise awareness they adopted a more pragmatic approach and opened the first animal shelter for cows in Russia, in the city of Kazan.

While the activists are more than willing to freely accept cows from like-minded contributors, they also have no reservations about spending their own money to buy animals out if it means saving them from ruthless owners or a butcher’s cleaver.

The cows living in the shelter are provided with plenty of food along with everything that’s necessary for a life free of abuse and exploitation; they even get special treats for their birthday.
