Syrian militants kidnapped Russian national Konstantin Zhuravlyov in 2013.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian national Konstantin Zhuravlyov kidnapped by militants in Syria in 2013 was released and returned home, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said Friday.

"Russian national Zhuravlyov Konstantin Vladimirovich… who was captured in northern Syria by one of the armed groups while traveling around the world in October 2013 and held against his will for three years, was returned to Russia," the statement read.

Zhuravlyov reportedly met with his family as soon as the FSB finished all the necessary proceedings that required his presence.

Zhuravlyov was set to travel across Syria and deserted areas of the Middle East and to complete his journey in Egypt.

The Russian national was allegedly kidnapped by militants in Syria in early October 2013. In October 2014 the Russian Investigatory Committee for the Tomsk region started proceedings into his case under Article "kidnapping by an organized group."
