MAKHACHKALA (Sputnik) — A total of three militants were killed in a counterterror operation carried out in the south of Russia's Dagestan, a source in the regional law enforcement authorities told RIA Novosti on Monday.
"During the operation a group of militants was detected. The servicemen demanded to surrender, but militants opened fire. The servicemen fired back killing three militants, according to preliminary data," the source said.
He added that the counterterror operation which was launched on Sunday would continue after sunrise.
Dagestan is a hotbed of Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus. Multiple violent attacks have plagued the region over the past decade.
