MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday expressed condolences to relatives of Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of Russian General Staff Col. Gen. Igor Sergun in view of his sudden death, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Sergun died on Sunday, aged 58.
Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu also expressed his condolences over Sergun’s death. According to the defense ministry, under Sergun’s leadership, Russian military intelligence system was further developed, operated properly and revealed threats to the country’s security on time.
Sergun had been the GRU head since December 2011.
