Moscow called on all forces in the Middle East to unite as one counter-terrorism power to defeat the Islamic State jihadist group, the Russian Foreign Ministry Information and Press Department said in a statement on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, two suicide bombings claimed by ISIL occurred on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital of Beirut, killing at least 43 people.

"We once again urge all the forces in and beyond the Middle East interested in eliminating the Islamic State and other similar criminal organizations to unite in one counter-terrorism front… to defeat the terrorists as soon as possible and restore stability in the Middle East," the statement read.

The Russian Foreign Ministry urged that perpetrators of the deadly Beirut attack be swiftly brought to justice.

Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram of condolence to Nabih Berri, speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, stating that Russia was prepared to cooperate closely with the Lebanese authority in the fight against terrorism.
