MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The case of the murder of Russian politician Boris Nemtsov will be transferred to the Chief Investigation Department of Russian Investigative Committee, the organization said Saturday.
"Russian Investigative Committee chief Alexander Bastrykin ordered the criminal case to be transferred to Russia's Chief Investigation Department," the press service statement said.
According to the Russian Interior Ministry, Nemtsov was killed at 11:40 p.m. Moscow time on Friday (20:40 GMT), when several shots were fired at him from a car.
Nemtsov has been in Russian politics for over two decades. He served as deputy prime minister and energy minister under the country's former President Boris Yeltsin.
He voiced opposition to the current Russian government and was also actively involved in business in recent years.
The investigators said Nemtsov was allegedly shot from a Makarov pistol. Several versions are currently considered, with some of them establishing a connection between the murder and the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris, current events in Ukraine and the politician's business activity.
