The satellite constellation of Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) is fully operational, providing global coverage, the head of the Russian presidential administration said Wednesday.

MOSCOW, April 23 (RIA Novosti) – The satellite constellation of Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) is fully operational, providing global coverage, the head of the Russian presidential administration said Wednesday.

“A total of 28 spacecraft are part of the orbital grouping, 24 of them are in a normal mode of operation. This allows the GLONASS signal to be received in every region of the planet,” Sergei Ivanov said at an international navigation forum in Moscow.

In recent years, the Russian navigation system has become more advanced, and its accuracy has grown to 2.9 meters, closer to GPS, which has 1.8-meter accuracy, Ivanov said.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin told the forum that new equipment in the future could boost the GLONASS signal by 100 percent.

The Global Navigation Satellite System, which began operating in 1993, is a Russian equivalent of the US Global Positioning System (GPS). The GLONASS network provides real-time positioning and speed data for land, sea and airborne objects.
