An unknown gunman opened fire in a cafe in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, killing a tax police official, a police spokesperson said on Monday.
The shooting took place in the central city of Khasavyurt late on Sunday. The official died from his injuries on the way to hospital.
Police are searching for the gunman, who reportedly fled the scene in a Vaz car.
According to the National Anti-Terrorist Committee, more than half of all terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus in 2010 have occurred in Dagestan.
