Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has nominated candidates to replace the unpopular governor of Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, Georgy Boos, the Kremlin press service said on Monday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has nominated candidates to replace the unpopular governor of Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, Georgy Boos, the Kremlin press service said on Monday.

Among the candidates are the head of the regional pro-Kremlin United Russia party, Nikolai Tsukanov, Kaliningrad Mayor Alexander Yaroshuk, and his predecessor and current State Duma Deputy Yury Savenko.

Boos was ousted on August 17 amid growing public unrest in the region.

In January 2010, over 10,000 Kaliningrad residents took part in a protest rally that was initially planned as a protest against transport tax hikes but grew into a large-scale political demonstration demanding the resignation of Boos and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Medvedev also re-nominated incumbent president of the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, Arsen Kanokov, to the region's presidential post, the press service said.

Kanokov has headed Kabardino-Balkaria since 2005.

Other nominations include the head of the regional government, Alexander Merkulov, and the regions parliamentary speaker, Anuar Chechenov.
