A Russian rapper who received a 10-day jail sentence in southern Russia for publicly insulting police officers is writing poetry behind bars, a spokesman for Volgograd police said on Tuesday.

"There were no complaints from him about the conditions of his detention - on the contrary, he said he felt fine and was writing poetry," the spokesman said.

Noize MC lead singer Ivan Alexeyev, who attracted media attention with his song "Mercedes S-666" about a high-profile car crash involving the vice-president of Russia's oil giant LUKoil, in which two eminent doctors were killed in February, was arrested after the Urbania music festival in the south Russian city of Volgograd on July 31.

Alexeyev was detained after swearing at police who tried to stop his "posse" carrying out one of their stage routines, involving the throwing of small change at the group by audience members.

Volgograd regional police said the musician had already appealed the verdict.
